Batavia rejoins Showdown at Sears Centre

For the second straight year, the Batavia boys basketball team will take part in the High School Hoops Showdown at the Sears Centre in Hoffman Estates.

The Bulldogs will conclude the showdown with an 8 p.m. game on Saturday, Jan. 19 against Marshall.

Last year, Batavia played West Aurora and defeated the Blackhawks 55-52 on Phil Albrecht's 3-pointer at the buzzer.

Batavia, 23-3 last year, plays a Marshall team that went 26-7. Both teams return four starters. Northwestern-bound Nick Fruendt leads Batavia, while Marshall features 6-foot-4 senior small forward Ryan Hare. Marshall has made the state tournament the past two years.

Marshall also played in the showdown last year and defeated Schaumburg 57-48.

This year's showdown will go from a doubleheader to a tripleheader that will also feature a girls game. The girls start the day with a 4:30 p.m. tipoff between Buffalo Grove and defending state champion Fenwick.

Buffalo Grove went 34-2 last year and returns four starters after back-to-back Elite-8 appearances. They are led by the Mocchi twins, Allison and Maggie, both going to Northwestern.

The Friars (36-2 last year) will reload with a talented group of returning players led by Tricia Liston, who along with recent transfer Katlyn Payne, an all-state guard from St. Edward, figure to be two of the top sophomores in the state.

Game 2 matches Jacobs (26-2) and Fenwick (16-10).
