Place your order now for St. Matthew pig roast

Delores Crisara knows the secret to a pig roast.

She has run the pig roast at St. Matthew Lutheran Church the past 16 years, seeing her order for pigs grow from two the first year to 15 this year.

And she's been contacted by people across the country including Montana as to how to plan their own pig roast. Her advice is simple.

"Look for a man who raises the pigs," she said. "That's what it's all about."

Crisara goes back to work as the Hawthorn Woods church holds its 17th annual pig roast from noon to 5 p.m. Sunday.

The church is on Old McHenry Road between Quentin and Midlothian roads in Hawthorn Woods.

A new feature this year is the opportunity to pre-purchase pork to take home.

Pre-packaged pork available for $7 a pound will be ready for pickup any time after 2 p.m. in the school kitchen. To order, call the church at (847) 438-4443.

In addition to the meal of roast pork, potato salad, baked beans and sweet corn, Culver's Ice Cream will be on the midway again this year with ice cream cones, turtle sundaes and cheese curds.

Funnel cakes, hot dogs, ice tea, soda, wine and beer also will be available for an additional cost.

Back again by popular demand to provide entertainment will be Rick Colen of "Clowning Around." Formerly of Ringling Bros. Circus, Colen will be on hand to entertain with his feats of magic, juggling and comedy. Also on hand will be clown and balloon master Flo Szydelko.

Beginning from 11:30 to 1:30 p.m., St. Matthew's "Praise Team" will perform Christian rock music on the midway. Take part in Steve Swick's "Karaoke" from 2 to 5 p.m. And the Alpiners will stroll the midway from noon to 3 p.m.

There also will be midway games, moon walk and bingo.

Crisara said while most people simply come for the pigs, what brings people back is that there is so much more.

"It's a big family thing. Everyone gets together," she said.

Admission is $10 for adults and $5 for children 4 to 10. Crisara said proceeds go to charity as well as to support ongoing improvements at the church.

To buy tickets or for information, call the church office at (847) 438-7709.
