Police beat: Lightning sparks house fire

Burlington

•Firefighters were called to the 200 block of Meadow View in Burlington at 4:52 a.m. Tuesday where lightning had struck a home. Extensive damage was done to the living room and the home's cathedral ceiling. Water damage was confined to the first floor and basement. The family was evacuated, no one was injured, and by 6 a.m. the fire was out.

Carpentersville

Security at Kohl's at Spring Hill Mall detained a woman at 1:45 p.m. Monday after she shoplifted jewelry from the store, a police report said. Surveillance video showed she placed some of the jewelry down her shirt and some in her purse, the report said. Abigail Duran-Cruz, 22, of 367 Walnut Ave., Elgin, was charged with felony retail theft, police said. She was unable to post a $2,000 bond and was taken to the Kane County jail.

Elgin

•Police were called to McLean Boulevard at Route 20 at 4 p.m. Monday where a truck driver and a motorcycle driver were involved in a fight. The truck driver told police the motorcycle driver tried to pull him out of the cab of his truck. The motorcycle driver, Hal A. Dahlstrom, 51, of 371 Madison Drive, Streamwood, was charged with battery, police said. He posted a $100 bond and was released.

•Security at the Meijer store on Randall Road detained a Streamwood woman at 7:30 p.m. Monday after they saw her place $171.89 worth of items in her purse and leave the store, according to a report. Police said the items included two pairs of children's shoes, a chain, a pair of earrings, two necklaces and a car air freshener. Gloria Doss, 56, of 574 Cochise Place, was charged with felony retail theft, police said. She was unable to post $2,500 and was taken to the Kane County jail.

Huntley

•Between 3 p.m. Aug. 6 and 7 a.m. on Aug. 7, a theft of 34 cartons of hardwood flooring occurred at a home under construction in the area of 12300 Bartelt in the Del Webb subdivision. The flooring was valued at $3,000.

Pingree Grove

•A power outage around 7:15 a.m. Tuesday caused the destruction of two pump motors for the swimming pool at the Cambridge Community Center in the Cambridge Lakes subdivision. The two motors were valued at about $800. Firefighters said there was an odor of something electrical burning and a small amount of smoke when they arrived.
