Business briefs: Motorola spent millions to lobby

WASHINGTON -- Mobile handset maker Motorola spent about $3.4 million in the first half of this year to lobby the federal government, according to a disclosure form. The Schaumburg-based company lobbied on numerous issues, including patent and visa reform, tax and health care, and federal grants for first responder agencies, according to the form posted online Friday by the Senate's public records office. Motorola spokesman Chuck Kaiser verified the amount.

U.S.: Black should forfeit $22 million

CHICAGO -- Conrad Black must forfeit more than $22 million in ill-gotten gains derived from his acts of fraud while chairman and chief executive officer of Hollinger International, U.S. prosecutors contended in a court filing Tuesday. Black and three other former Hollinger executives were convicted of fraud last month by a Chicago federal court jury. Prosecutors say Black and two of the men are jointly liable for more than $16.9 million of the sum they seek and Black should pay another $5 million. Prosecutors initially sought Black's forfeiture of $92 million when he and the other defendants were indicted in 2005. He is free on $21 million bail. Sentencing for all four men is set for Nov . 30.

IFS recalls 7,500 sandwiches

SOUTH ELGIN -- Imperial Food Services Inc., or IFS, is recalling about 7,500 sandwiches because they are potentially contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes, an organism that can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, elderly people and others with weakened immune systems. The sandwiches were sold in Illinois and other states in vending machines and at convenience stores. They were buffalo chicken sandwiches PLU 3707, Cuban sandwiches PLU 3795, and asiago Italian sandwiches PLU 3770. No illnesses have been reported, according to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. Several calls to company officials were not returned.
