Puerto Rican pageant:

The Puerto Rican Heritage Organization will hold its 2007 scholarship pageants for Miss Puerto Rico of Elgin and Junior Miss Puerto Rico of Elgin on Sunday at Holiday Inn, 495 Airport Road in Elgin. Dinner begins at 6 p.m. followed by the pageant and dance until 11 p.m. Tickets are $45 in advance or $55 at the door. Cost for the dance only is $20 in advance or $25 at the door. Contestants are judged on their research project on a Puerto Rican town, along with public speaking, cultural costume, and evening gown competitions. This year's winners will receive scholarships of $1,000 for Junior Miss and $3,000 for Miss Puerto Rico. This year's contestants for Junior Miss are: Haley M. Anderson and Irys Perez. Contestants for Miss Puerto Rico are: Noely Alicea, Diandra Entler, Christina Mendez, Jesenia Placeres, and Denise Ramos.

Kids center wins honor:

Joy Community Christian Children's Center was selected as the next Gordon Larsen Business Achievement Award winner by the Lake in the Hills Business Relations Committee. The award program was established by the committee to recognize village businesses for their contributions to the community. The nomination recognized Joy Community Christian Children's Center for its regular donations to the Lake in the Hills Food Pantry, as well as its recent participation at the Lake in the Hills Air Expo. In addition to community support, it also was recognized for its quality services. Joy Community Christian Children's Center will be presented with the award at the Aug. 23, village board meeting.

Give blood in Huntley today:

Huntley is hosting a community blood drive from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. today at the Heartland Blood Centers' mobile coach at Old Village Hall, 11704 Coral St. Walk-ins are welcome, and a photo ID is required. If you donate blood, you get a card that entitles you to a free quart of Oberweis ice cream.
