Motor City selected top sports city

Detroit topped the list of best sports cities, followed by New York and Dallas-Fort Worth, according to rankings done by Sporting News magazine. Manager Jim Leyland and the Tigers reached the World Series, the Pistons made the NBA playoffs, the Shock won the WNBA title and the Red Wings advanced past the second round of the playoffs for the first time since 2002.

"Detroit had a great year, with several teams advancing far into the playoffs," said Bob Hille, Sporting News executive editor. "Detroit benefits from having a full complement of very good teams and terrific fans to cheer them on."

The other cities on the top 10 list, based on a 12-month snapshot, include Chicago (No. 1 in 2006), Los Angeles, Boston, Denver, Phoenix, Philadelphia and Minneapolis-St. Paul. The criteria for the 14th "Best Sports Cities" list includes sports atmosphere, regular season won-lost records, playoff berths, bowl appearances, championships, attendance and ticket prices, among other factors.
