Juvenile charged in murder:
An Aurora 16-year-old has been charged as an adult in the weekend shooting death of an Aurora man. Edgar A. Sanchez, of the 500 block of Lakelawn Boulevard, is accused of acting as the "lookout" for another suspect who shot 27-year-old Renee Saldana early Sunday morning in the 500 block of Seventh Avenue. Police are being tight-lipped about details as the investigation continues, and more arrests are expected. Police said the shooting appears to be gang-related. Anyone with information is urged to call Aurora Area Crime Stoppers at (630) 892-1000. A reward of up to $1,000 is being offered. Callers may make anonymous tips and still collect rewards.
Police hunt for vandals:
Naperville police are looking for three people wanted in connection with the spray-painting vandalism at the city's Van Buren parking deck July 10. Video surveillance from the day shows three males police believe have knowledge of the vandalism that occurred on the second, fourth and fifth floors of the deck. Naperville Crime Stoppers is offering a reward of up to $1,000 for information leading to the arrest of the suspects responsible. Anyone with information is urged to call (630) 420-6006. Tipsters may remain anonymous and collect the reward.
Repaving closes lanes:
Lane closures are scheduled for the next two days along a portion of Washington Street in Naperville. The section between Ring and Royce roads will be down to one lane in each direction between 7 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. today and Friday. Workers will be repaving the section during the two-day stretch. Traffic delays are anticipated and motorists are encouraged to take alternate routes. The project is part of the city's ongoing Washington Street Improvement Project.
'Senior Idol' auditions:
Senior citizens can compete in the "Senior Idol" contest at the 12th annual Senior Lifestyle Expo slated for Sept. 5-6 in Oak Brook. The deadline to enter is Aug. 15 or until all slots are full. "Senior Idol" is open to people who will be 60 or older by Sept. 5. Auditions will be from 10 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Sept. 5 and from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Sept. 6 at Drury Lane Theatre, 100 Drury Lane, Oak Brook. Audition times must be scheduled in advance and there is a $10 entry fee for individuals. The cost is $20 for a group of up to four. District 4 finance award:
Addison School District 4 earned a certificate of excellence in financial reporting from the Association of School Business Officials International. The district was honored for preparation and issuance of its fiscal year end 2006 Comprehensive Annual Financial Report. The award is one of the highest for school district financial operations, and the school has earned it three years in a row.
