Durlacher strikes silver in Pan-Am Games

Buffalo Grove graduate Lindsey Durlacher took the silver medal Wednesday night for the U.S. Greco-Roman wrestling team in the Pan American Games in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

Durlacher was wrestling up a weight at 132 pounds and lost 6-0, 7-0 to Cuba's Roberto Monzon, an Olympic and World silver medalist.

"I thought it was going to be closer than it was, so I'm a little upset right now," Durlacher told Craig Sesker of USA Wrestling. "But I realize he's bigger than me and he's had some real big accomplishments in his career.

"He just got on top and his lock was pretty tight -- I've never felt strength like that. I guess that's what you get when you move up a weight. I'm a little disappointed but it was a good experience for me to keep preparing for the World Championships and the Olympics."

Durlacher, who usually wrestles at 121 pounds, cruised to wins in his first two matches.

Payne hoops skills camp: Former high school and college basketball coach Kent Payne and his son Cully, a standout junior-to-be at Burlington Central High School, will hold a one-day training session Friday, Aug. 3 at the Schaumburg Sportscenter.

Players will be trained in a variety of skill areas. The event is open to boys and girls from seventh to 12th grade and starts at 10 a.m. and costs $50.

For more information contact Kent Payne at (630) 235-3362 or via e-mail at bethebestskills@yahoo.com.

ASEP clinics: An American Sport Education Program coaching clinic will be held in Arlington Heights on Aug. 11 at the La Quinta Inn and in Downers Grove on Aug. 26 at the Holiday Inn Express.

ASEP is the IHSA-required training for non-faculty coaches. Statewide, over 3,000 coaches are certified through this program yearly and yet many schools struggle to fill coaching vacancies.

Statistically, Illinois faces an attrition rate of over 40 percent across the board in coaching.
