Founder's Day something to celebrate

Good morning -- what are you doing today?

Come on down to Towne Park in downtown Algonquin and have a blast at Founders' Day! Come find me as I roam around the Founders' Days Market and Bazaar and stop to chat, OK? I'd love to meet you and give you a shot at a prize ... plus I really don't want to be a lonely slug standing there all by myself!

Stop by and fill out one of my little cards -- it'll take 30 seconds -- and I can enter you in our "Found her at Founders' Days" contest to win Kane County Cougar tickets and more. If you've got something you'd like covered or would like to see us do better, I'd love to hear it. See you there!

Free books!

You also will find free books for children from the Friends of the Algonquin Area Public Library along with lots of goodies and discounts from many local merchants Friday.

It's a fun way to spend some time and you'll enjoy roaming around Towne Park where the volunteers of Founders' Days always put on a great party. The parade starts at 11 a.m. Saturday, fireworks at dusk Sunday and there is a lot of fun in between.

Visit the fest Web site at algonquinfoundersdays.com for details. Towne Park, by the way, is tucked behind the historic Algonquin village hall on the corner of Route 31 and Route 62. Turn west on Washington Street and you'll find parking at the end.

Run, Forest, run ...

I'll bet you'll see some political candidates or wannabe candidates roaming around as well. I hear lots of folks are weighing a run for office on several fronts and it's starting to look like there will be some pretty feisty fights in the February primary. Several insiders tell me they expect particularly challenging races in the McHenry County Board District One race.

Pack up or out?

As you've heard, the battle to be the next McHenry County state's attorney also is getting lots of attention. We told you Wednesday that former McHenry County State's Attorney Gary Pack today will make an announcement about his intentions. I'd speculated that he'd likely opt out. Now I hear lots of discussions in the past 48 hours may have prompted him to keep his options open. Stay tuned.

Flip flop

McHenry County Health Department folks tell me they've been glad to hear from so many of you who are willing to volunteer to help them stage a "Flip Flop" flu Saturday You don't have to be registered. Just show up from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. at Johnsburg High School, 2002 Ringwood Road in Johnsburg. Take Route 31 north to Ringwood Road, turn right and go east to the school. Call (815) 334-0222 for more information.

The "flip flop" flu doesn't sound so bad at all, does it? But, you know a real pandemic flu outbreak would be anything but. If you can help our emergency responders prepare for the worst, we'll all be better off.

Remembering ...

May all of you Irving Crown Imperials and Imperial Scots enjoy your reunion this weekend! The two bands' alumni, staff, boosters and families undoubtedly have plenty to chat about. It's been 17 years since the last organized reunion of these folks, some who played for Irving Crown High School, Dundee High School, or the later combined Dundee-Crown High School. think that's going to be some party!
