Elgin fire chief offered job

Elgin fire chief offered job: The Bartlett Fire Protection District has officially offered Elgin Fire Chief Mike Falese the assistant fire chief job in Bartlett. The offer was unanimously approved by the Bartlett fire board's five trustees Wednesday night, following an hour-long, private discussion, Trustee James McCarthy said. Falese, a 24-year veteran of the Elgin fire department, turned in a letter last week announcing his retirement from the city of Elgin. He hasn't discussed where his next job might be, though Bartlett officials confirmed he was their choice for assistant chief. The terms of the offer were not released, nor it is clear if Falese has been given a deadline to respond to the offer. He was unavailable Thursday for comment.

Fatal crash probe ongoing:

The investigation into a fatal collision in Schaumburg near Woodfield Shopping Center Wednesday is expected to take at least a week before any potential charges are filed, police said. The crash killed Dennis G. Pearce, 37 , of Elwood, Ill. when the 2004 Jeep Wrangler he was driving was struck by a 1994 Mercury Sable driven by 19-year-old Israel Valadez of Plainfield. Preliminary indications are that the Jeep, which rolled over in the crash, was southbound on West Frontage Road and was struck on its passenger side by the Mercury as the Jeep at Higgins Road, police said. The crash closed several roads in the area for hours.

An Arlington Heights man is being held on $30,000 bond after police said he had a sexual relationship with a 15-year-old girl. Hoffman Estates police said Thursday that Thomas Terrill, 24, of 2639 N. Waterman Ave., was charged with two counts of aggravated criminal sexual abuse after the two had inappropriate sexual contact twice in July. One of the incidents occurred at a home on the 1400 block of Glen Lake Road and the other at a home on the 1800 block of Huntington Boulevard in Hoffman Estates, police said. Terrill is scheduled in court Sept. 7.

Health office breaks ground:

A two-story, 56,985-square-foot medical office building approved by Lake Barrington officials back in May 2005 is scheduled to finally break ground at 2 p.m. today east of the Saturn dealership on Northwest Highway. Construction was delayed longer than expected by financial issues, but more than 50 percent of the building has now been reserved by future tenants, developer Norman Hays said. Lake Barrington Village President Kevin Richardson is to attend the event, which will be followed by a reception at the nearby Onion Pub & Brewery on Pepper Road.

Public appreciation day:

Barrington Allstate agency Allegretti, Kalesz & Assocs. will hold its annual customer appreciation day, 10 a.m.-2 p.m. today at the Marketplace Mall, 5069 Shoreline Road. The event is family-friendly: children can climb onto a fire engine, talk with Wauconda firefighters, get free fire safety coloring books, paint their faces and eat ice cream. A book fair and hotdogs are provided by neighboring businesses. Officers from the Tower Lakes Police Department will inspect child safety car seats for free.
