Vasco doubles net income

OAKBROOK TERRACE -- Vasco Data Security International, an Oakbrook Terrace-based Internet and data security solutions company, more than doubled its net income in the second quarter. The company said strength came from successful launches of new products and a large number of new customers. Net income for the quarter ended June 30 rose to $6.9 million, or 18 cents per diluted share, from $3 million, or 8 cents per diluted share, a year ago. Revenues rose 75 percent in the quarter to $32.4 million compared with $18.5 million in the year-ago period.

Brunswick profit down 29 percent

LAKE FOREST -- Boat maker Brunswick, based in Lake Forest, posted a 29 percent drop in quarterly earnings Thursday as U.S. consumers steered clear of big-ticket, discretionary purchases. Second-quarter net profit fell to $59.3 million, or 65 cents per share, from $83.2 million, or 87 cents a share, a year before. Analysts, on average, expected 64 cents per share, according to Reuters Estimates. Net sales fell 1 percent to $1.52 billion.

Federal Signal posts higher profit

OAK BROOK -- Federal Signal Corp., based in Oak Brook, on Thursday reported income from continuing operations of $11 million, or 23 cents per share, for the second quarter of 2007, on revenue of $317 million. For the second quarter of 2006, the company earned $10.6 million from continuing operations, or 22 cents per share, on revenue of $310 million. The company designs and manufactures products for municipal, governmental, industrial and airport customers.

Tenneco earnings rise 67 percent

LAKE FOREST -- Tenneco, the maker of car exhaust systems based in Lake Forest, said second-quarter profit rose 67 percent as sales of diesel emissions-control systems increased in North America and Europe. Net income climbed to $40 million, or 84 cents a share, from $24 million, or 51 cents, a year earlier. Sales rose 36 percent to $1.6 billion. Tenneco, the maker of Monroe shock absorbers and Walker mufflers, began taking on new business to provide diesel exhaust controls for trucks in North America.

Office Depot sees drop in profits

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. -- Office Depot said Thursday its profits dipped 8 percent in the second quarter as weak sales in North America offset double-digit growth in international revenues. Net income fell to $109.1 million, or 40 cents per share, from $118.3 million, or 41 cents per share, a year ago. Sales rose to $3.63 billion from $3.49 billion a year earlier. Excluding charges, the Delray Beach-based company earned 43 cents per share in the most recent quarter.

Cereal maker raises guidance

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. -- Kellogg Co. raised its full-year guidance on Thursday after the Battle Creek, Mich.-based company reported strong revenue growth and improved margins helped boost second-quarter profit by 13 percent. Net income rose to $301 million, or 75 cents per share, in the three months ended June 30 from $267 million, or 67 cents per share, a year earlier. Sales rose 8.7 percent to $3.02 billion from $2.77 billion.

Goodyear posts large earnings gain

CLEVELAND -- Goodyear Tire & Rubber Co. said Thursday its profits surged in the second quarter, the result of a focus on higher profit tires. Goodyear earned $56 million, or 26 cents per share, for the quarter ended June 30 compared with $2 million, or a penny a share, a year ago. Sales rose to $4.9 billion for the quarter from $4.7 billion a year ago. Excluding one-time charges and gains, Goodyear's earnings from continuing operations would have been 36 cents per share.

Wendy's reports flat revenue

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Wendy's International, the third-largest hamburger chain, said Thursday it earned $29.2 million, or 33 cents per share, for the three months ended June 30. It lost $29.1 million, or 25 cents per share, a year ago. Revenue was flat at $633 million compared with $634 million from continuing operations a year ago. Including the Tim Hortons coffee-and-doughnut chain Wendy's spun off last fall, sales a year ago were $1 billion.
