Schaumburg police allay fears after possilbe gang shooting

Schaumburg police said Monday they don't believe the general public is in danger in the wake of a possibly gang-related shooting early Sunday morning.

A 30-year-old Skokie man was struck by gunfire and injured after he left a bar in unincorporated Cook County at about 4 a.m. Sunday, Schaumburg Acting Police Sgt. John Nebl said.

The man crossed Algonquin Road near Thoreau Drive to return to a Schaumburg parking lot where he'd left his car. A man waiting there shot him with a handgun four times, police said. Another man walking with him from the bar with was not injured.

The victim's injuries were not thought to be life-threatening. Bullets grazed his arm and leg and he suffered more serious wounds to his wrist and groin. He was taken to Northwest Community Hospital in Arlington Heights.

The victim is not cooperating with police and doesn't wish to sign a complaint against the shooter, Nebl said.

"Our investigation leads us to believe this could be a gang-related incident," he said.

The only descriptions police have received about the shooter are vague and conflicting, Nebl said.

The best description police have to work with until more information comes to light is that of a man 5 feet 7 inches to 5 feet 9 inches tall, 160 to 190 pounds and wearing a white or black hooded sweatshirt.
