GED and career training

GED and career training: The Early School Leaver Program is accepting applications for fall semester at its Addison campus, 301 Swift Road. The next informational meetings will be at 1:30 p.m. Aug. 22 and 29 at the campus. The program offers free, GED preparation, workplace skill-building, and career training for DuPage County residents ages 17 to 21. Youth sentenced:

A youth suspected in a series of burglaries in Elmhurst was sentenced Monday to five years probation for his role in the crimes. The youth plead guilty to one county of burglary and two counts of residential burglary. The youth and four other suspected minors allegedly stole money and electronic equipment from 12 homes and five schools, which were all in Elmhurst. In addition to the probation, the youth was ordered to serve 30 days in juvenile detention, pay restitution and perform 50 hours of community service.

Dance program open house:

Naperville Park District is hosting an open house for its dance program from 1:30 to 4:30 p.m. Aug. 4 at the Barn Recreation Center, 421 W. Martin Ave. Prospective youth dancers and their families can learn more about the dance program, enjoy student performances, meet faculty and make ice cream sundaes. Neuqua soldier improving:

Zach Arnold, a 2004 Neuqua graduate who was injured in Iraq, is moving to outpatient care, according to his mother, Andrea. The Army sergeant lost part of his leg May 31 when his Humvee hit a roadside bomb and has been under the care of Brooke Army Medical Center in Fort Sam Houston, Texas. Arnold now goes to physical therapy twice a day at the adjacent Center for the Intrepid and will soon be fitted for a prosthetic leg. He is scheduled to be honored with a Purple Heart next month.

Carol Stream home burns:

A Carol Stream home has suffered $50,000 worth of fire damage. Carol Stream firefighters responded to the house fire at 6:21 p.m. Sunday after receiving a call about visible smoke and flames at the two-story residence at 1N355 Farwell St. No one was home at the time. It took roughly an hour to extinguish the flames. No one was injured. Fire and smoke damage were limited to the second floor. The cause of the fire is under investigation, but firefighters believe it was accidental.
