Best & brightest

•Roshina Khan, Elizabeth Rabelo and Shreena Shah of Schaumburg, all Schaumburg High School seniors, were among 19 Illinois students who received $1,000 scholarships as part of the seventh annual Burger Kingˆ® Scholars Program. The scholarships are awarded to help offset the cost of attending college or enrolling in a post-secondary vocational/technical school.

The Burger King/McLamore Foundation works with high school principals and counselors to identify students who meet the criteria by displaying exemplary academic achievement. Students are selected based on grade point average, work experience, financial need, co-curricular activities and community service.

•Illinois Wesleyan University in Bloomington named the following students to the spring 2006-07 Dean's List for achieving a grade-point average of 3.5 or better on 4.0 scale.

Hoffman Estates: Dave Buesing, Aaron Hays, Ella Hays, Amanda Kowalski, Imin Moriya and Amanda ReCupido.

Schaumburg: Carol Ambrose, Craig Bajko, Becky Carlton, Sean DeGrande, Katie Harshbarger, Brad Hoffman, A.J. Keller, Alex Mahr, Kate Paton, Jessica Pearce, Adriana Piccinini, Jennifer Schnupp and Leah Strege.

•Marquette University in Milwaukee, Wis., named the following students to the spring 2007 dean's list.

Hoffman Estates: Lilly Agopian, Diederich College of Communication; Megan Bartoszewski, Klingler College of Arts and Sciences; Joseph Capacete, College of Engineering; Katharine Fehr, College of Business Administration; and Matthew McDonnell, College of Business Administration.

Schaumburg: Brigette Brennan, Klingler College of Arts and Sciences; Gina Corrado, College of Health Sciences; Carolynn Culler, College of Business Administration; Neel Patel, College of Health Sciences; and Jennifer Piorkowski, Klingler College of Arts and Sciences.

•Matt Corrado of Schaumburg, a freshman majoring in business at Coastal Carolina University, Conway S.C., was named to the dean's list for the spring 2007 semester. He is a graduate of Conant High School.

•Hope College in Holland, Mich., named the following students to the 2006-07 second semester dean's list for achieving a minimum 3.5 grade point average.

Hoffman Estates: Kathleen M. Schmid, sophomore; and Amy L. Weber, senior.

Schaumburg: Katherine L. Janczak, senior; and Melissa N. Van Dahm, senior.

•John A. Atchison, Kevin A. Kurz and Michael P. Murphy, all of Schaumburg, were inducted into Phi Kappa Phi, an international honor society for juniors and seniors, at Northern Illinois University's April Honors Day ceremonies in DeKalb.

•Kristin Mertel, daughter of Duane and Kim Mertel of Hoffman Estates, graduated May 20 with degrees in biochemistry and physics from Monmouth College.

•Eastern Illinois University in Charleston named the following students to the spring 2007 deans' list for being in the top 10 percent of their class.

•The University of Iowa awarded bachelor's degrees to the following students at its spring 2007 commencement ceremonies in Iowa City.

Hoffman Estates: Trenton Steven Bavaro, business administration, management; Lisa Marie Hellstrom, business administration, marketing; Lindsey Anna Robinson, theatre arts; Samantha Anne Smead, English; Michalina Diana Zawilla, communication studies; and Natalie Marie Zeppo, business administration, marketing.

Schaumburg: Lisa N. Cerami, elementary education; Scott Burton Crassweller, economics; James L. Farley, business administration, marketing; and James R. Gummerson, business administration, finance.

•Ashley Marie Karl of Schaumburg graduated since May 2007 from Columbia College-Elgin with a bachelor's degree in criminal justice.

•Rachel Duffy of Hoffman Estates, a student majoring in packaging at the University of Wisconsin-Stout, received the Chancellor's Award for the spring 2007 semester. The award is given to students who achieve a grade point average of 3.5 or above. The university serves business, industry, education and helping professions through its specialized educational programs.
