Cancer patient's friends ask for help

Ginger Gebert, longtime resident of Des Plaines, is fighting stage 4 metastatic breast cancer and her friends are trying to help her financially. A fund has been set up for her at Washington Mutual Bank in Des Plaines.

Des Plaines police earn safety honor

The Illinois Association of Chiefs of Police recently named the Des Plaines Police Department as the first place winner of the 2006 "Illinois Traffic Safety Challenge."

The Illinois Traffic Safety Challenge is a statewide highway safety awards program which recognizes law enforcement agencies throughout the state for their accomplishments in promoting traffic safety in their communities.

The competition requires the agencies to report their policies covering highway safety, officer training, public information, education initiatives and enforcement and effectiveness measures.

Each agency's application is reviewed by a team of independent judges. The awards will be presented at the annual Illinois Police Chiefs' summer conference Aug. 8 in Rosemont.

Garden club gives butterfly info

The Garden Club of Mount Prospect will be sharing a table with the public works department at the Mount Prospect Block Party July 28.

Members will answer questions and hand out brochures. A monarch butterfly breeding demonstration will be on display.

The garden club will meet at 11:30 a.m. Sept. 12 at Friendship Park Conservatory, 395 Algonquin Road, Des Plaines. Joanne Loebel will show members how to create notecards using pressed dried flowers. Guest fee is $3 including supplies. Call (847) 635-6239.

DJ Drew Walker at Capannari's

Capannari Ice Cream, 10 S. Pine St., Mount Prospect, will play host to Chicago's US99 radio show from 3 to 7 p.m. July 26. Disc jockey Drew Walker and crew will be at Capannari's broadcasting from the store.

Walker has created his flavor, Good Fortunes ice cream, which consists of vanilla ice cream with caramel swirls and chocolate-covered fortune cookies.

Capannari Ice Cream will have hand-packed pints of Good Fortunes with fortune messages on the inside of the lid. Some lids will have prizes. Part of the proceeds from the sale of Good Fortunes will go to the Best Buddies Foundation.
