Scalloped Tomatoes

1/4 cup butter 1/2 cup chopped onion2 cups coarse breadcrumbs6 medium tomatoes, peeled and slicedSalt and pepper to tasteSugar to tasteHeat oven to 350 degrees.Melt butter in sauté pan and cook onion until tender but not brown. Stir in breadcrumbs.In a 1-quart casserole layer half of the tomatoes; sprinkle with salt, pepper and sugar; cover with half the crumb-onion mixture. Repeat layers.
