    A DuPage County judge Monday refused to reconsider the 55-year sentence he handed down earlier this month to a Willowbrook man found guilty of murder. Juan Cuellar, 25, will be 78 when he completes his sentence for the 2012 shooting death of 18-year-old Joshua Holmes.

    A 25-year-old Willowbrook man was sentenced Friday to 55 years in prison for the 2012 shooting death of 18-year-old Joshua Holmes in a feud over a drug debt. Juan Cuellar had said he feared for his safety, but, “This was nothing more than a street execution,” Assistant State’s Attorney Steve Knight said in court. “This defendant left Joshua Holmes laying in the street like an animal.”

    A 25-year-old Willowbrook man facing life in prison for the 2012 shooting death of 18-year-old Joshua Holmes wants a new trial. Attorneys for Juan Cuellar, of the 10S700 block of Lilac Lane, filed a motion Wednesday requesting a new trial in an effort to overturn the April 29 guilty verdict of two counts of first-degree murder. Cuellar’s attorney, Paul DeLuca, said he is challenging the conviction on several matters.

    A DuPage County jury found a 25-year-old Willowbrook man guilty of first-degree murder Tuesday afternoon for the shooting death of 18-year-old Joshua Holmes. The six-person jury deliberated less than three hours before finding Juan Cuellar, 25, of the 10S700 block of Lilac Lane, guilty of two counts of first-degree murder of Holmes, a Downers Grove Township resident. Holmes was shot to death Sept. 24, 2012, at the intersection of Honeysuckle Rose and Hyacinth lanes near Willowbrook. Cuellar faces 45 years to life in prison.

Cuellar, charged with the murder near Willowbrook, took the stand in his defense. “I was scared he was pulling out a gun on me so when he reached, I reached and I fired at him. I just kept firing at him," Cuellar testified.

    Prosecutors wrapped up their case in the first-degree murder trial of Juan Cuellar, with Cuellar’s ex-girlfriend testifying she helped get rid of the murder weapon. Kara Collins, 22, of Villa Park, testified she received a phone call from a “remorseful” Cuellar saying he needed to talk to her, just 15 minutes after he shot and killed 18-year-old Downers Grove Township resident Joshua Holmes.
