Sheriff: Barricade situation ends peacefully near Willowbrook

DuPage County sheriff’s deputies have resolved an hourslong standoff with a person who had barricaded himself in an apartment near Willowbrook, authorities said.

Deputies responded to the Kingery Quarter complex at about 9:10 a.m. Monday after receiving information that a person had fired gunshots out of his apartment near a bus stop before barricading himself inside, sheriff’s officials said in a news release.

The person, whose age was not released, remained inside the apartment, refusing to comply with deputies’ commands to open the door, sheriff’s officials said. After a couple of hours, the person released a woman and child and then barricaded himself again in the apartment.

A SWAT team assembled in the area through a countywide law enforcement task force known as MERIT. At about 3 p.m., SWAT team members breached exterior glass doors and took the person into custody without any use of force or injury, the news release stated.

No charges have been filed as of Monday evening.

Sheriff’s officials earlier Monday advised people to avoid Honeysuckle Lane and Route 83 due to a police presence.

A strip mall parking lot near the intersection was the site of a mass shooting that killed a 31-year-old man and injured more than 20 others in June 2023.
