  • Autopsy confirms second brother's death in Huntley shooting was suicide Jun 6, 2014 5:26 AM
    A second person has died due to gunshot injuries sustained during a fight between two brothers in Huntley last month. Mark Grundei, 50, died Wednesday from a penetrating gunshot wound to the head that the coroner said was a suicide. Grundei shot himself after shooting his brother May 26, authorities said.

     
  • Algonquin wants your help keeping hydrants clear Jan 2, 2014 5:29 PM
    Algonquin leaders are calling on the public to help them keep the village’s fire hydrants safe and visible for the firefighters. The village launched its Adopt-A-Hydrant program earlier this week. “We have over 2,200 hydrants in town and when we get snow covers like this last storm, it’s very hard to get around to clearing the hydrants just by the quantity,” said Andy Warmus, the village’s utilities superintendent.

    A sport utility vehicle smashed into a tree in unincorporated McHenry County near Huntley Thursday morning, after it was re-ended by another vehicle, authorities said. The crash required the SUV driver’s hospitalization, but the heavy rainstorms in the area complicated the situation by preventing a rescue helicopter from getting to the scene, said Andrew Zinke, undersheriff for the McHenry County Sheriff’s Office.

Saletta, 62, has announced his intention to retire, effective Nov. 2. "I've had a long career in fire service and I think it's time for me to move on," Saletta said.

    About 50 area residents attended the Elgin Area Firefighters Memorial Service held Saturday at the Elgin Fire Barn #5 Museum. Traditions "define who we were, and who we are," Huntley Fire Chief James Saletta said. Representatives of about a dozen local fire departments attended the ceremony.

    In nearly equal amounts of laughter and tears Wednesday, mourners sounded the last alarm for Huntley Fire Capt. John "Winky" Winkelman, who was killed in Crystal Lake while riding his motorcycle last week. More than 450 people filled St. John's Lutheran Church in Union for Winkelman's funeral, and about 300 of them were from his and surrounding fire departments.

    Huntley First Capt. John C. Winkelman, 54, was killed in a motorcycle crash in Crystal Lake Thursday afternoon. The 20-year veteran of the department was riding on Route 176 when a vehicle pulled out in front of him, according to police. Firefighters are mourning "Winky," who they say was a fixture of the department.

  • Huntley fire kills 73-year-old man, hurts firefighter Nov 4, 2011 4:58 PM
    A Friday morning fire in Huntley’s Sun City development killed a man believed to be 73 years old and injured a firefighter, authorities confirmed this afternoon. Kane County Coroner Chuck West said he doesn’t have a positive identification yet on the man and authorities are trying to find next of kin. An autopsy will be conducted on Monday.

    An Elgin woman’s poodle was killed by her neighbor’s dogs at about 10:30 a.m. Sunday in the 200 block of Liberty Street, according to police reports. The woman let her dog out and later received the poodle, dead, from her neighbor, who said he heard his dogs barking and looked outside to see the poodle already dead, reports said. The poodle probably entered the neighbor’s yard through a small hole in the fence; the neighbor owns five boxers and one Pomeranian, reports said.

    Communities across the Fox Valley stopped Sunday to remember the events of Sept. 11, 2001. In Elgin, the ceremony marked the latest in annual tributes that have been conducted since 2001. “We never want a year to go by that we don't remember,” said Tricia Dieringer, American Legion Post 57 Americanism chairman, who has coordinated the ceremonies every year for the last decade.

    No one was injured in a raging barn fire that drew crowds in Huntley Thursday night, fire officials said. Huntley Fire Chief Jim Saletta said fire crews were called to an abandoned farm at the end of Donald Drive at 6:47 p.m. Thursday night with reports that an old barn had caught fire.
