Dr. Brian Muska is the inaugural recipient of the award, named in honor of the township’s former community health director who died in 2012 after a long battle with colon cancer.

    Hanover Township's first 5K run-walk will step off in Elgin next month. Proceeds from the event will go toward a new program that connects residents with dental and medical services. After the race, township officials will give a tour of the Izaak Walton Center, a renovated facility that opened earlier this year in Elgin.

    Hanover Township will offer health screenings from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday, April 11 to test for heart defects, osteoporosis and other illnesses. Life Line Screening will conduct the tests for small fees at the township’s Senior Center, 240 S. Route 59, Bartlett.

    Hanover Township is looking for nominations for its annual Principal of the Year award. “Principals work to better the lives of our youth, which can often be a thankless service,” township Trustee Howard Krick said in a news release. “This is a great opportunity to nominate these leaders in recognition for all the hard work they do in our children’s schools.”

    An establishment Republican, Art Niewiardowski, defeated a young GOP activist in a bitter intraparty fight for Elk Grove Township Republican committeeman. Other winners in committeeman races were Democrat Steve Caramelli in Hanover Township, Republican Char Foss-Eggemann in Maine Township and Democrat Matt Flamm in Palatine Township.

Students from Bartlett, Elgin, South Elgin and Streamwood high schools are encouraged to participate in an interactive workshop Thursday, March 13. Teenagers will learn how to respond to tough situations and weigh the consequences of their choices, said Nicole De Falco, a member of the township Committee on Youth.

    Hoffman Estates trustees have approved a $35,000 contract for the internationally known rock band Smash Mouth to perform as the headline act at Northwest Fourth Fest on Saturday, July 5. The San Jose, Calif. band, whose songs include such late ‘90s hits as “Walkin’ on the Sun” and “All Star,” will receive the majority of the $50,000 budgeted for main stage entertainment — which includes seven other acts over three days.

Faced with budget constraints, trustees opted to join Elgin in cutting ties with the sprawling Fourth of July celebration held on the grounds of the Sears Centre. "We weren't getting the return on investment," Trustee Ed Zimel said.
