    The Elgin Community College men’s basketball team started the 2012-2013 season with a 7-5 mark. But injuries and other circumstances played a major role in the derailment of last year’s campaign as the Spartans limped to a 9-22 overall mark and finished 2-12 in the Illinois Skyway Collegiate Conference.

    Just because the Elgin Community College women’s basketball team roster has virtually all new players on it doesn’t mean the expectations are any lower. The Spartans return no starters and only 3 players from last year’s team that won Illinois Skyway Collegiate Conference and Region IV titles and advanced to the NJCAA Division II nationals. It was the first time an ECC basketball team qualified for a national postseason tournament.

    In retirement, Ed Dolik has dedicated himself to helping others: Volunteering at the Lutheran Home, a nursing home in his hometown of Arlington Heights, as well as feeding the poor at St. James Cathedral in Chicago. He retired last year at 60 after a long career as a stagehand in Chicago theaters and decided to enter culinary school at Elgin Community College. And on Friday, he entered the final round of the fifth annual Prime BurgerHouse/ECC burger contest as the dark horse and took home the gold medal and $2,000.

The Elgin Area School District U-46 superintendent shared insights into his personal and professional lives Wednesday at an Elgin Chamber of Commerce luncheon at Elgin Community College.

  • David Smith remembered fondly by all Oct 24, 2013 5:31 PM
    In East Dundee, the name David Smith is synonymous with public service, because he was the village’s longtime police chief, its first village administrator and the director of the QuadCom emergency dispatch center in Dundee Township. Smith, 64, died Monday at his East Dundee home after a short battle with cancer.

    In one U-46 diversity training exercise, participants were asked to line up and answer a series of questions, such as whether they had ever been denied a bank loan or had been stopped by police, or if someone clutches a purse tighter upon seeing them on the sidewalk. Based on their individual responses, each employee either moved a step back or a step forward.

    Elgin Area School District U-46 has a 45.7 percentage point gap between the portion of minority students and that of minority teachers. It's a similar story in Schaumburg Township Elementary District 54, Naperville Unit District 203, East Aurora Unit District 131, and others. “Moving forward, we must make a concerted effort to reach out to underrepresented group members," a Round Lake Area Unit District 116 official said.

     
  • Elgin CC wins Region IV tennis title Oct 12, 2013 9:38 PM
    Maria Morales Nelson won a singles championship as did the doubles team of Stacy Krach and Natalie Judkins to lead the Elgin Community College women’s tennis team to the Region IC championship Saturday. The Spartans scored 18.5 points to win the title. Moraine Valley was second with 15 and Illinois Valley third with 14.5.

    The art of storytelling doesn't necessarily require a huge production stage, or special effects and props. It can just as easily be captured in a soliloquy at the hands of a skilled performer who engages with every expression, tone of voice and gesture. That's the idea behind John Lithgow's critically acclaimed, one-man show, “Stories by Heart,” which makes its Chicago-area debut Nov. 2 at the ECC Arts Center on the campus of Elgin Community College.
