    More than 400 graduates attended commencement ceremonies Saturday at Elgin Community College. Separate sessions held for transfer degrees and the career and technical program featured graduates Charmaine McAllister and Eustacio Baldazo Jr., who told inspirational stories.

The “Harmonies and Melodies” concert will be at 3 p.m. Sunday, May 18, at Elgin Community College’s Blizzard Theatre, 1700 Spartan Drive, Elgin. Tickets are $15, $12 for students and seniors.

    About 75 people attended a ceremony Monday to mark the beginning of construction on the Hanover Park Education and Work Center. The center is intended to make education and job assistance more accessible to residents of the area. “This is going to improve the quality of life for the people who live here and the folks who need the most help,” said state Rep. Fred Crespo.

Director Azar Kazemi says, "I really see Juliet as this strong female protagonist who makes strong choices that propel this story forward and I think that her strength sometimes gets lost in productions."

    The Elgin Community College administration is looking into outsourcing custodial services, which could mean the college potentially laying off roughly 98 full-time and part-time custodial employees. Dozens of custodial employees packed a recent ECC board of trustees meeting calling for the board to drop the idea of hiring an outside maintenance firm.

  • Judson baseball team fights through adversity Apr 3, 2014 5:40 PM
    Injuries can be an extremely unkind part of sports. In the case of the Judson University baseball team, unkindness has be thrown to the curb and replaced with optimism and results. The Eagles have weathered the loss of three key roster components and stood at 19-12 overall and 5-2 in the early stages of CCIW play through midweek. Judson recently swept its home conference doubleheader opener against Olivet Nazarene.

    The thought of spring break often evokes stereotypical images of college students partying it up on the beaches of Cancun and other like destinations. Ten Elgin Community College students sought a more rewarding way to spend their time by volunteering to help build a house for Habitat for Humanity of Northern Fox Valley. “I’m not much of a beach person,” said James Warner, 22, of Lake in the Hills. “All I was going to do this spring break was sit at home, play some video games, and clean my own house. This is something just to help out other people as opposed to helping myself.”

    Massive air conditioning units were removed from Elgin Community College buildings Monday, to be replaced with new units. The work, which consumed much of the space in a southwest parking lot, was done while students were on spring break.

  • Hanover Park, colleges join forces on project Mar 7, 2014 10:51 AM
    Hanover Park will sink more than $700,000 into a construction project for a new facility run by two community colleges. The village's investment was vital to bringing the Education and Work Center to a strip mall on Barrington Road, officials say. “Hopefully, this will just be a great model going forward for bringing programs to communities in a way that just makes sense for all of these institutions,” spokesman Phil Burdick told the village board Thursday night.
