Elgin area residents can find out first hand from former Tuskegee Airmen, the famed group of black World War II combat pilots, and other African American military veterans who will be special guests at the Ninth Annual Black History Family Festival Saturday at Gail Borden Public Library in Elgin. The festival, dubbed “Honoring Our Heroes: Contributions of African American Veterans,” will be held from 1 to 5 p.m. at the library's main branch, 270 N. Grove Ave.

Organizers arranged the program by ability, which meant there were some interesting combinations onstage. “You literally might have a 6-year-old sitting next to somebody who’s 76 and for me, that’s one of the joys of the program,” said Colin Holman, the American Grands conductor.

    Elgin Community College recently purchased the remaining 41 acres of the former Spartan Meadows Golf Course for yet-to-be-determined expansion. The sale of the property, just south of the college’s campus at McLean Boulevard and Spartan Drive, was finalized last month. It culminates an $8 million deal struck almost a year ago with the city of Elgin for the land, said Sharon Konny, ECC vice president of business and finance.

    A tentative agreement for a new faculty contract at Elgin Community College was reached, officials said. Negotiating teams for the college’s faculty association — which represents 526 part-time and full-time instructors — and the college board reached a tentative agreement on Thursday for a new three-year contract. Details of the agreement will not be released until it is ratified by union members and the board of trustees.

  • Former heroin addict to give ECC graduation speech Dec 12, 2013 4:01 PM
    Sandra Hoston's life was on a downward spiral from years of abusing alcohol and heroin starting in her late teens. At 16, Hoston was pregnant with her first child. Soon after graduating from a Chicago high school, Hoston started hanging out with the wrong crowd and began abusing heroin to fit in. “I was addicted for 25 years,” said the now 51-year-old Elgin resident. Hoston went back to school in 2010 to get her associate degree in human services at Elgin Community College. Friday she will deliver the commencement speech during the college's graduation ceremony.

The owner of a home valued at $250,000 would pay an additional $21 yearly, said Sharon Konny, vice president of finance.
