Cornerstone Church celebrates 20th anniversary May 20

Cornerstone United Methodist Church will celebrate its 20th anniversary on Pentecost Sunday, May 20, with a daylong variety of homecoming activities.

The church building is at Russell and Muirhead roads, just west of Elgin, in unincorporated Plato Center.

Cornerstone officially was formed on Pentecost Sunday in 1998 during an outdoor "marriage service" between Plato Center United Methodist Church and Faith United Methodist Church of downtown Elgin (the former First Evangelical United Brethren Church).

Both of the merged congregations had been serving their areas since the 1850s. The current building opened in 2002.

The celebration will begin with worship and the annual confirmation service at 10 a.m. Sunday.

Founding pastor Donald Keck will return from his retirement home in North Carolina to deliver the sermon, and former pastor Lisa Kruse-Safford also will speak.

A catered lunch will follow at noon.

From 1 to 3 p.m., children will be able to enjoy outdoor games and activities under the supervision of older youth. Church members and a variety of former leaders will share tales of the congregation's past and present with "A Stroll Down Memory Lane."

A nursery and care for younger children also will be available.
