School Board Members Appreciated for the Work They Do

Woodland District 50 is joining communities throughout the state to recognize and thank school board members for the extraordinary dedication they make to our public schools.

November 15 is officially designated each year as School Board Members Day in Illinois and Woodland will take time during the regular school board meeting on Thursday, November 16 to honor the current board members.

"Woodland school board members are our neighbors who work closely with parents, education professionals and other community members to create the educational vision we want for our students. The vision sets the course for an equitable educational program for all students. Yet, too often people are sometimes quick to criticize school board members without really knowing all of the details that went into any given decision. As a result, the efforts of school board members often go unrecognized and unrewarded," said Woodland Superintendent Dr. Joy A. Swoboda.

"The recognition is one way to say thank you for the personal sacrifices school board members make as they carry out the tradition of representative democracy and represent the community's connection to how public schools are governed," she added.

At Woodland, board members bear financial responsibility and oversight for an annual budget of more than $85 million; the more than 5,600 students; 853 employees; and five schools.

Across Illinois, nearly 6,000 men and women serve on local public school boards, governing the education of 2,041,779 students in 4,163 public schools across 855 school districts, and overseeing combined budgets of more than $31 billion.
