Woodland Invites Families to Participate in Green Apple Day of Service on Sept. 23 at Woodland Primary School

Gages Lake--Woodland Community Consolidated School District 50 invites students staff, parents and community members to help make Woodland Primary School a healthier, more sustainable learning environment as part of the Green Apple Day of Service to be held from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. on September 23 at the school, 17366 W. Gages Lake Road, Gages Lake.

The Green Apple Day of Service, an initiative from the Center for Green Schools at the U.S. Green Building Council, brings together advocates from around the world and encourages them to take action in their communities through service projects at local schools. The Day of Service, now in its fifth year, provides an opportunity for students, teachers, parents, elected officials, organizations, companies and more to transform all schools into healthy, safe, cost-efficient and productive learning places.

Each year our staff comes up with special projects for our service day. This year our goals for the day are to create a special rock pathway to highlight our diversity and celebrate each child's unique personality with their very own painted rock. In addition, work will be done to beautify our butterfly garden and paint stencils on our playground. All ages are invited to attend and participate. Participants are asked to wear comfortable clothing appropriate for painting or working outdoors. The event will be held rain or shine as there are projects scheduled for indoors and outdoors.

"The projects at Woodland Primary allow participants to help make their school healthier and more sustainable. It's a feel-good day," said Primary School Principal Stacey Anderson. "This event brings together our families and our staff in a joint effort to beautify our learning environment and model for our youngest Woodland students how little hands and caring hearts can make a big impact!"

The Primary School, a Green Ribbon School winner in 2014, is dedicated to modeling and teaching students how to care for their school and the environment. Even the youngest students in the district are involved in making their school environment safe, healthy and beautiful.

Held annually, the Green Apple Day of Service provides opportunities for students, teachers, parents, elected officials, organizations, companies and more to take action in their communities and demonstrate where we learn matters.
