Naperville house burns

The Naperville fire department is investigating what caused a large blaze at a house on the southwest side of the city. Around 4 p.m., a resident of the home on the 3500 block of Red Wing Court called 911 and reported that the house was on fire. All four residents evacuated the home by the time the first firefighters arrived on the scene less than four minutes later.

Woman, man identified in Lake Forest shooting

A man and a woman who died from gunshot wounds in Lake Forest this week had been in a relationship that ended last fall, authorities said in a news release Thursday. Preliminary autopsy reports show Claire Vanlandingham, 27, of Lake Forest died of injuries sustained from multiple gunshot wounds she received about 6:20 a.m. Wednesday on the 600 block of North Western Avenue, Lake County Coroner Howard Cooper said in the release.

Metea science teacher facing indecency, lewd exposure charges

A teacher at Metea Valley High School in Aurora has been charged with public indecency and lewd exposure after being accused of exposing himself to a teenager in a parking lot, authorities said Thursday. Luke Pigott, 24, of the 3500 block of Stackington Drive in Naperville, turned himself in Thursday to face the misdemeanor charges on a Will County warrant, Naperville police said. Full story.

Burglars hit three Elmhurst homes in one hour

Burglars struck several Elmhurst homes between 7:45 and 8:45 p.m. Wednesday on the city's north side, police said Thursday. Officers responding to a residential burglar alarm on the 200 block of E. Elmhurst Ave. discovered pry marks on the door and fresh footprints in the snow. The investigation revealed that two other homes in the area had been burglarized, one on the 200 block of N. Larch and the other on 200 block of N. Michigan.

Police searching for tow-truck driver who struck 14 vehicles in Park Ridge

Police are searching for a tow-truck driver who struck a total of 14 vehicles in Park Ridge on Sunday morning. Police got a 9-1-1 call shortly after 9 a.m. Sunday reporting that a white tow truck had struck a tree in the parkway on the 2300 block of West Oakton Street, according to a news release issued Thursday. By the time police arrived, the tow truck had fled the scene with a tree limb wedged into the tow apparatus on the truck.

Mount Prospect gives manager 5 percent raise, $20,000 bonus

The Mount Prospect village board rewarded Village Manager Michael Cassady with a 5 percent pay hike and $20,000 performance bonus Wednesday for what leaders called his "successful implementation" of critical priorities in the community's strategic plan. With the increase, Cassady will earn $214,987 this year, according to the village. The terms of the agreement were nailed down in a closed village board session Dec. 19 and approved unanimously by trustees Wednesday.

Bears' coaching search continues with interview of Vikings DC

Minnesota Vikings defensive coordinator George Edwards Thursday became the second candidate to interview with GM Ryan Pace for the Bears' head-coaching vacancy. It was the first NFL head-coaching interview for the 50-year-old Edwards. He had the NFL's No. 1 defense this season in his fourth year as coordinator, although Vikings head coach Mike Zimmer does the defensive play-calling.

Bulls hoping for no interruptions once LaVine makes his season debut

Isaiah Thomas had a successful debut for Cleveland on Tuesday, scoring 17 points in 19 minutes against Portland after recovering from a hip injury. A day later, when the Cavaliers visited his old home in Boston, Thomas was inactive except for waving at fans and riding a stationary bike. The Bulls are hoping to avoid that scenario with Zach LaVine. The hopeful plan is when he's back, he's back - ready to play significant minutes and in no need of days off.
