New learning opportunities offered at Wildcat Summer Adventures

Woodland District 50 is offering a revamped summer school program this year with a new name and format designed to provide quality classes and scheduling convenience for parents.

Called Wildcat Summer Adventures, the summer school program provides four classes: language arts, math, STEM (science, technology, engineering, math) and recreation. Parents decide if they want their child enrolled in a grade-level or an enrichment-level class.

Classes will be from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Mondays through Thursdays, June 12-29, at Woodland Middle School, 7000 Washington St., Gurnee.

"Unlike the previous half-day schedule for Summer Scholars, Summer Wonders and Boost programs held over several weeks, this year's program is designed to not only provide quality summer learning through all-day classes, but also be sensitive to working families trying to schedule vacations and provide children with a fulfilling summer," said Jordan Anderson, director of Wildcat Summer Adventures.

In collaboration with the Gurnee Park District, Woodland parents may sign up for before- or after-school care services at the park district. Transportation between the park district and the Middle School would be handled by Woodland District 50.

The cost for summer school is $340 per child. The transportation fee is $77 per child.

Woodland's half-day Extended School Year for special needs students will operate separately June 20 to July 19.

At Wildcat Summer Adventures, breakfast is optional and students will also have the option of buying a hot lunch or bringing a cold lunch. Students who are participating in the free and reduced lunch program may use that for summer school as well.

Online registration is now open, and the last day to register is March 10.
