Discover 'Hidden History of A Christmas Carol' at Dundee library Saturday

Make the Dundee Library one of your stops during the festive "Dickens in Dundee" weekend.

On Saturday, Dec. 5, author Rochelle Pennington will present "The Hidden History of A Christmas Carol" at 2 p.m. at the Dundee Library, 555 Barrington Ave. (Route 68) in East Dundee.

This fascinating program takes a close-up look at the literary genius of Charles Dickens, England's most celebrated Victorian novelist, and explores the hidden history behind the author's 1843 Christmas classic. What events inspired "A Christmas Carol" to be written? Who was it written for? How did Dickens' historical novel "single-handedly resurrect" Christmas at a time when factories were open and churches were closed on Dec. 25? By 1900, no other book in the world had sold more copies except the Bible.

Pennington's narrative will offer factual perspective and behind-the-scenes insights into the epic influence of Dickens' immortal characters: Ebenezer Scrooge, Jacob Marley, and a trio of Christmas ghosts.

The program is free. Please register at www.frvpld.info or call (847) 428-3661, ext. 3.

The Fox River Public Library District serves 70,000 residents of Carpentersville, East Dundee, West Dundee, Sleepy Hollow, Gilberts, and parts of Algonquin. Visit frvpld.info for more information.
