Wines of Italy featured at Wine Down Wednesday Aug. 19

Savor the nuances of six delectable Italian wines at East Dundee's third "Wine Down Wednesday" from 5 p.m. to sunset Aug. 19 at The Depot, 319 N. River St.

The "Festa dei Vini Italiani" (or "Celebration of Italian Wine") event will feature three white and three red wines provided by the Anvil Club in East Dundee.

Featured whites include Bisol's Prosecco Jeio, which is a lightly effervescent wine with a floral aromatic from delicate stone fruits. It is produced in the Veneto area of Italy. Terredora di Paolo's Falanghina comes from Italy's coastal region of Campania. This wine is fresh, floral and clean (no oak) in the mouth with aromas of apple, quince, pear and pineapple. Finally Otella's Lugana, another white wine from the Veneto region, is produced from Turbiana grapes and has medium body with an exotic aroma of minerals and citrus.

Assisted by a knowledgeable wine tasting staff from Maverick Distributing and the Anvil Club, visitors will also be tasting reds including Elena Walch's Lagrein from the northeast region of Alto Aldige. This dry wine has medium body and has the structured youthful freshness of wild berries. Hailing from Sicily, Colosi's Nero D'Avola is dry and full-bodied with warm notes of dark cherry and plum. Also offered will be Argiano's Non Confunditur from Tuscany, which is a generous rounded blend of Cabernet Sauvignon; Merlot, Syrah and Sangiovese that provides a dry hint of oak.

A $5 tasting fee per three wines sampled will be charged. Featured wines will be available for purchase by the glass, bottle or by case for later delivery.

While tasting their wines and listening to live instrumental jazz, mixed with Italian favorites performed by the Streder/Peterson band, visitors will also be able to view unique art pieces available for purchase and meet the artists who created them.

Local businessman Blair Motl organized the gathering of artists and worked hard to attract artwork from a wide range of media. "We've got a great selection of works fashioned from all types of materials including textiles, oils, clay, wire, alloys and ink," he said.

Popular at last year's gatherings were the hand-painted "Wine Down Wednesday" wine glasses designed by Tricia Saviano. Each glass is individually hand-painted for the event by Artisticology. The glasses are available for purchase and are the third glass in a series of four. All proceeds from the sale of glasses will go the Dundee Foundation.

During the event, Artisticology will be offering visitors the on-site opportunity to join others in making their own masquerade mask. The mask can be worn to the Masquerade Ball scheduled for Saturday, Oct. 31. Entrance to the Masquerade Ball will require a mask; more details to follow.

Pre-registration for the $20 group mask-making class is encouraged and participants are asked to contact Crystal at Artisticology at (847) 707-4433 or crystal@artisicology.com.

"Wine Down Wednesdays" is sponsored by The Anvil Club, Payroll Vault and Artisticology and has featured wines from various regions throughout the summer months.

The final tasting of the season, scheduled for Sept. 23, will feature European wines.
