Learn about 'Victorian Mourning Customs: Lifting the Veil off Morbid Genealogical Treasures'

The Elgin Genealogical Society will meet at 9:30 a.m. Tuesday, May 5, in the first-floor meeting room of the Gail Borden Public Library, 270 N. Grove Ave. in Elgin.

Debra Dudek will be speaking on "Victorian Mourning Customs: Lifting the Veil off Morbid Genealogical Treasures."

Dudek will give a glimpse into the customs and rituals of death in Victorian Britain and North America. Victorians kept keepsakes, mementos, and paperwork as part of their "cult of mourning." These materials can be used with modern tools and new resources.

Debra Dudek is head of adult and teen services at the Fountaindale Library District in Bolingbrook. She has a master of sciences degree in information and library studies from the University of Stratheclyde, Glasgow, UK.

The public is invited to attend all Elgin Genealogical Society meetings, the morning meetings are on the first Tuesday and evening meetings the third Thursday of the month. For details visit elginroots.com.
