St. John's Lutheran School hosts writers event

Give a child a chance to write a book, and it's amazing what he or she can do.

St. John's Lutheran School in Elgin challenged their kindergarten through eighth-grade students to do just that.

The results of their labors were on display for family and friends Thursday night as part of the school's St. John's Writer's Evening.

Topics ranged from biographies and sports to fiction and poetry. Books were bound and displayed in classrooms that were decorated along book themes. There was a chocolate river in the fourth-grade "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory" room, rats running wild in the fifth-grade "Mrs. Frisby and the Rats of NIMH" room, and a stark cityscape in the eighth-grade "Divergent" room. All classrooms were open again on Friday morning for the school VIP Day.

Students come for a special breakfast and chapel service with their VIP, then tour the classrooms and Scholastic Book Fair. These events are held annually as the culmination of Lutheran Schools Week, which began Jan. 26.
