Three-way village president race in Oak Brook

Oak Brook Village President Gopal Lalmalani will face a pair of challengers, including a sitting trustee, in the April 7 election, but two other municipal leaders, Carol Stream Village President Frank Saverino and Wood Dale Mayor Annunziato "Nunzio" Pulice will run unopposed.

The filing period ended Monday for mayor, city councils, school boards, park boards, library boards and other elected positions in most DuPage County communities.

Here's a quick look at how the president and mayoral races are shaping up:

Oak Brook

Oak Brook Trustee Mark Moy and Natalie Cappetta both have filed to run against Lalmalani, who is seeking his second term as village president.

"After the new board came in four years ago, we have done a lot of work to improve transparency and accountability," Lalmalani, 65, said. "A lot of work still remains to be done."

Moy, a 65-year-old retired emergency room physician, has been a village trustee for six years. He said he has already told Lalmalani he will not run a negative campaign.

"I've got the leadership to hold a board together," Moy said. "My nature is to get along with people and to work together with people instead of fighting."

Cappetta, who filed Monday, could not immediately be reached for comment.

Wood Dale

Pulice will be running unopposed for a second mayoral term in Wood Dale.

He has said his primary goal is to continue improving the city's infrastructure.

"Not including the (city's new $30 million wastewater) treatment plant, we've spent $40 million in infrastructure during the last four years as we continue to position Wood Dale for the future," Pulice said. "All we hear is 'Itasca did this' and 'Elmhurst does this' and 'Elk Grove Village does that.' But now, it's Wood Dale's turn. We've taken the initiative to get out in front and ensure we're a viable community and great place to live."

Carol Stream

Saverino will be running unopposed for his third term as Carol Stream village president.

He has said he decided to run again in part because he enjoys what he is doing to make the village a better place.

If re-elected, he said his goals are to make sure the village does not have a property tax, to make the village even safer and to work closely with all the taxing bodies.

Naperville and Wheaton

The election filing period ended last month in Wheaton and Naperville.

In Wheaton, Mayor Michael Gresk will be running unopposed in April.

In Naperville, where longtime Mayor George Pradel is stepping down, four candidates will compete for the mayoral seat. The race will feature two city council members, Steve Chirico and Doug Krause, along with dental office manager James Haselhorst and retired firefighter Marty Walker.
