Local schools fight breast cancer at Dig Pink Volleyball Classic

Faith Christian Academy, Harvest Christian Academy of Elgin, Calvary Christian School in Naperville and Mooseheart School of North Aurora joined forces to raise nearly $1,000 for breast cancer research at the Dig Pink Girls Volleyball Classic on Sept. 13 at Faith Christian Academy in Geneva.

The players for the teams played the tournament in honor of or in memory of a breast cancer survivor or victim, and most of the players and coaches wore pink to pay tribute to breast cancer survivors and to show their support for breast cancer research and awareness. Funds from the sale of special Dig Pink T-shirts and admissions went to the Side-Out Foundation to help find a cure for breast cancer. Donations were also taken from individuals and families who attended the tournament, and Faith Christian Academy's Girl Scout and Brownie Troops supported the cause, and breast cancer survivors were recognized for their courage and perseverance during the pre-tournament ceremony.

On the court, Faith Christian Academy defeated Mooseheart in the semifinals and Harvest Christian Academy in the finals to capture the championship. Mooseheart beat Calvary Christian in the third-place match. All four schools earned team trophies and player ribbons in an exciting tournament experience.

Thanks to everyone who made the Dig Pink Classic a rousing success: the players, the staff led by Terri McCormick, parents, volunteers, all the teams and those who contributed to the funds raised for breast cancer research via the Side-Out Foundation.

"It was a great day of volleyball for a great cause and a great learning experience for the players about one of society's biggest health threats to women," said Faith Christian Academy coach Jeff Smith. "The girls learned a powerful lesson in how they can make a difference helping fight this disease even as young student-athletes."
