Regional title for Wheeling

The Mid-Suburban League boys soccer champ is also a regional champ.

Wheeling defeated Maine East 3-0 on Friday to win the Class 3A Maine East regional championship and earn a spot in next week’s 7 p.m. Tuesday semifinal in the Evanston sectional.

Luis Herrera had a first-half goal for Wheeling, and Jose Garcia gave the Wildcats some breathing room with a pair of second-half scores, both assisted by Irving Mancilla.

The Wildcats will meet either Lane or New Trier.

Evanston 4, Maine West 3: A 4-2 edge in penalty kicks allowed the regional host Wildkits to claim the Loyola regional title and advance into into the semifinals of the sectional it will host.

Evanston will face Maine South, a 2-1 winner against Glenbrook South in regional final action Friday at Glenbrook North.
