Fire Department Provides Onsite Education for 5th Grade Students at Currier Elementary School

In honor of Fire Prevention Week October 6-12, 2013, 5th grade students from Currier Elementary School in West Chicago were visited by West Chicago fire fighters and received an onsite education. The students rotated through three stations which included a “tour” of an ambulance and fire engine, CPR education and instruction, and finally fire prevention and safety, including tips.

The CPR portion aligned particularly well with the 5th grade literature curriculum. The students had just finished reading and discussing the book The Red Kayak – a story about a 13 year old boy who performs CPR on a 3 year old drowning victim.

Throughout the CPR presentation the students were able to compare and contrast the CPR procedures outlined in the book and the procedures currently being taught by emergency responders.
