Cloe combo works wonders for Carmel

Scott Cloe is considered one of the newcomers on Carmel’s boys soccer team.

That designation might not last long, from the looks of things.

Though he’s only a sophomore, Cloe is fitting in rather quickly after having scored his first two varsity goals in just a couple of games.

It only helps that Scott’s senior brother Adam is leading by example.

“It’s awesome to get the goals, and to be playing with my brother,” Scott Cloe said. “It’s always fun to make that combination. He watches over me and tells me what to do. We do play at home a lot, and that helps us out.”

The brother combination sure helped Wednesday, as Carmel Catholic picked up a 4-1 victory over Lakes in the opening game of the North Shore Shootout at Lake Forest.

Wednesday’s games were originally to be played on Tuesday but were postponed due to heat.

Carmel (2-0) next plays host Lake Forest at 4:30 p.m. Thursday afternoon in the semifinals. The Scouts got past Deerfield 3-1 on Wednesday.

Scott Cloe scored twice, with the first tally assisted by his brother Adam, and the second by Phil Homa.

The Corsairs’ other goals were from Evan Potter, assisted by Adam Cloe, and on a header from TJ Johnson following a Jeremy Jenich throw-in.

“So far, I do like what we’re doing offensively,” said Carmel coach Ray Krawzak, whose team opened the season with a 5-4 victory over Lake Zurich on Monday. “We still have to solidify stuff defensively. Once we get that figured out, we should look very promising for the rest of the season.”

Lakes received its goal from Joey Savino, with an assist by Jon Borzick.

The Eagles know they need to improve but are encouraged by some aspects of their first game.

“It was very tough, and Carmel was very good,” Lakes coach Kevin Kullby said. “We were a little asleep at the wheel and not up to the pace of play.

“We play these games for the competition and find where your problems are. Carmel defended well and didn’t allow us to get into the box. We did have some good chances and some looks at the goal.”

The Eagles face Deerfield at 4:30 p.m. Thursday.

Ÿ Round Lake appeared headed into penalty kicks in its season opener. But a misfortunate goal in the final seconds lifted Waukegan past Round Lake 2-1 on Wednesday afternoon.

The Bulldogs’ Alexis Salgado sent a crossing ball toward the far post. It was deflected and found the net right before the final whistle.

“We had something like that happen against Deerfield last year,” Round Lake coach Hugo Tellez said. “It’s unfortunate that something like that bit us.

“We do have a lot depth. We just couldn’t finish in this one, and you need to finish our chances.”

The Panthers got their goal from Eddie Ramirez on a penalty kick in the first half.

Miguel Zavala scored Waukegan’s other goal unassisted in the 60th minute.

Round Lake meets Highland Park at 4:30 p.m. Thursday afternoon. The Giants were a 4-1 loser to Dundee-Crown Wednesday.

The Chargers will take on Waukegan at 4:30 p.m in the other semifinal.
