Fivelson to lead Conant baseball program

Derek Fivelson has been named Conant’s baseball head coach, taking over for Jerry Song, who stepped down for personal reasons after 12 years as Cougars head coach.

“We couldn’t be happier with Derek’s selection to lead our baseball program,” said Conant Principal Tim Cannon. “Derek is student-centered, and a quality person. He relates well with both student-athletes and parents alike, and his enthusiasm and energy make him a perfect fit for this job.”

Fivelson coached baseball at Hoffman Estates from 2002-2010, working with the sophomore and freshmen programs at the same school where he once excelled as a player. Fivelson competed for the Hawks from 1994-1997 before attending Saint Xavier University on a baseball scholarship. He a was team captain at Saint Xavier in his senior, seeing time at first base along with catching and pitching.

“We are very excited to have Derek join our coaching staff at Conant High School,” said Conant athletic director John Kane. “We’re looking forward to the direction he’ll take our baseball program. He was an exceptional ballplayer, and he’ll be able to draw from his experiences at both the high school and collegiate level to help prepare our kids.”

Fivelson has taught mathematics at Hoffman Estates since 2002 and coached the school’s Math Team since 2004. He has also served as an adjunct professor at Roosevelt University for the past your years.
