Grayslake North edges Vernon Hills

Grayslake North 9, Vernon Hills 8: In the final regular-season game for both teams, Grayslake North scored a run in the top of the seventh inning to pull out the win.

Merrick Gentile had 2 doubles and 2 RBI for the Knights and Adam Gomski had a triple. Meanwhile, pitcher Tommy DiProva got the win as North moved to 20-8 on the season.

For Vernon Hills, Tyler Feece went 3-for-5 with a double and 4 RBI and hit a hard line drive in the bottom of the seventh with two runners on that could have tied the game. But North managed to field the ball and throw Feece out by a step. Jordan Freibrun added 3 hits for the Cougars.

Wheeling 6, Warren 5: No. 19 Wheeling staged a slight upset over No. 13 Warren in opening round play at the Carmel regional.

Dom Cuevas had a home run for the Blue Devils in the losing effort.

McHenry 17, Round Lake 2 (5): In opening round regional action at McHenry, the host Warriors rolled to victory.

Grayslake Central 3, Richmond-Burton 2: The Rams finished the regular season at 23-12 with their win at Richmond-Burton.

Ryan Fontana had a solo home run while Matt Loeffl added 2 hits, including a double. Sterling Dixon and Pat Burba also had doubles for the Rams.

Kyle Henke tossed two scorless innings to earn the win while David Llorens didn’t allow any runs over the final 2 innings. He got the save.

Libertyville 5, Nazareth 2: Kevin Calamari had 3 hits, including a double, and drove in 2 runs to lead Libertyville to a nonconference win. Pitcher Jeff Barton got the victory.

Mundelein 5, New Trier 1: Mitch Schulewitz went 3-for-3 with a triple and a double to lead Mundelein, which moved to 27-4 on the season.

Will Farmer added 2 hits, including a double, while Derek Parola and Mike Metz each had a double.
