The awards banquet was held to honor people from many different walks of life who have been chosen for their contributions to conservation and birding in the Chicagoland area.

Brooks began working as a volunteer 30 years ago at Spring Valley, 1111 E. Schaumburg Road. Spring Valley Nature Center had recently opened and he was looking for work following college. After volunteering for a year and a half, he was hired as a naturalist and secretary in 1985. In 1991, he was promoted to manager of Spring Valley.

"I wasn't expecting the award," said Brooks. "It's quite an honor and it's humbling to be among those recognized at the reception."

Brooks credits the knowledgeable and passionate staff members at Spring Valley who share his enthusiasm for the environment.
