Meijer is looking to hire more than 900 seasonal employees in the Chicago area, meaning new jobs at the suburban locations in Rolling Meadows, Elgin, St. Charles, Algonquin and McHenry, company officials said.
The Grand Rapids, Mich.-based big-box retailer announced Tuesday it will be hiring 12,000 employees for the 2012 Holiday season, with 10 percent of those job in Illinois, spokesman Frank Guglielmi said.
"While most of the seasonal opportunities are part-time, these jobs can provide a gateway to a full-time career at Meijer," said Jenny Hawat, vice president of talent recruitment and retention. "As we move into a new year, we frequently look to seasonal employees first to fill our ongoing part-time and full-time needs."
Because the company plans to open another location in Evergreen Park next summer with 200-250 employees, Guglielmi said the seasonal positions do have the opportunity to be extended.
"This just reinforces Meijer's commitment to grow in Chicago with more jobs and more stores in the market," he said.
Suburban Meijer locations that will be hiring include 2252 N. Richmond Road in McHenry; 1301 Meijer Drive in Rolling Meadows; 9000 W. Golf Road in Niles; 130 S. Gary Ave. in Bloomingdale; 855 S. Randall Road in St. Charles; 400 S. Randall Road in Algonquin; 815 S. Randall Road in Elgin; and 800 N. Route 59 in Aurora. Meijer also has Chicago-area locations in Berwyn, Melrose Park, Orland Park, Bolingbrook, Plainfield and Oswego.
Meijer stores are open 24 hours a day and only close on Christmas Day. The company operates 199 supercenters and grocery stores in Michigan, Ohio, Indiana, Illinois and Kentucky.
