Horizon Elementary plan reading celebration, honoring veterans and more

Students and Staff at Horizon Elementary School in Hanover Park will be taking part in a National Celebration of Reading. Wednesday, Oct. 3 is Read for the Record Day at Horizon. With the support of members of the Bartlett High School Future Teachers' Association, Horizon students will be reading "Ladybug Girl" and the "Bug Squad" by Jacky Davis and David Soman. Nine Bartlett High School students will be here at Horizon shadowing classroom teachers.

A Family Fun Night is planned for Thursday, Oct. 4 at Horizon. Wheel of Wisdom Assemblies are scheduled at 11:50 for students in grades K-3, 12:50 for students in grades 4-6. In addition, an evening show for students and parents is scheduled for 7:00 PM. The Horizon PTO is hosting a Scholastic Book Fair in the school learning center from 2PM to 8PM on Thursday. The Scholastic Book Fair is offering a specially priced paperback edition of Diary of a Wimpy Kid: The Third Wheel scheduled to go on sale Nov. 13. Orders placed at the Book Fair will be shipped on Nov. 13.

Horizon students and staff will be hosting "A Day of Honor" for local active and retired veterans. Students and staff have invited active duty or retired members of the armed forces to a special program at 8:10 a.m. Friday, Oct. 12. During the program, Horizon Student Council members will present members of the Bartlett VFW with a donation to their "Operation Support our Troops - America" for Troops fund. Donations will be used to purchase crackers, canned soup, granola bars, foot powder, tuna, beef jerky, microwave popcorn, canned nuts and individually wrapped hot chocolate and coffee packets.
