Dundee-Crown senior Ali Sanders will trade the snowy winters of Illinois for the warm climate of the Sunshine State.

Sanders, a returning all-area girls basketball player, has committed to accept a scholarship from Florida Southern College, an NCAA Division II school in Lakeland.

“It’s truly an overwhelmingly beautiful place to be. It puts a smile on your face,” said Sanders. “They’ve had a good team the last couple of years and they won their conference last year. The coaches and players were really inviting and I felt like part of the family. I wanted to be a part of a successful program.”

Sanders said she would double major in college and plans to study physical education and human movement and performance. She chose Florida Southern over Sagniaw State, Missouri Western, Whitewater, Stevens Point and the University of Tampa.

A 5-foot-7 guard/forward Sanders, a 3-year varsity player, averaged 12 points and 5 rebounds per game for coach Michelle Russell’s Chargers last season. She also plays for coach Marty Dello’s Illinois Magic AAU team.

At Florida Southern, Sanders will join a program on the rise under sixth-year coach Jarrod Olson. The Mocs were 26-5 last season and win the Sunshine State Conference championship. They are also off to a 3-0 start this season, including beating No. 5 Delta State on Nov. 13.

“I’m happy and I’m so luck to have an opportunity like this,” Sanders said.
