Volunteer to bring Trail of History to life

Submitted by MCCD

McHenry County Conservation District is looking for fun and energetic volunteers to make the “Trail of History” come to life Oct. 15-16.

Attend the “Trail of History” volunteer orientation, from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 11, or Tuesday Aug. 16, at the Lost Valley Visitor Center, in Glacial Park, Route 31 and Harts Road, Ringwood.

Non-costumed volunteers help with guest services and grounds keeping duties. Costumed volunteers demonstrate historical crafts and life ways, that include candle making, log house family living, traditional cooking, children's games, cornhusk doll making, and military tactics.

More than 200 volunteer positions are available. Individuals of all ages are encouraged to get involved in this living history event which depicts the Northwest Territory between 1670 and 1850. Volunteers younger than age 14 can participate with an adult guardian.

Does this sound interesting? No experience is necessary, just an interest in history and a passion for interacting with visitors at this very special event. Volunteers work at least one, four-hour shift over the course of the two-day event, which attracts more than 10,000 people.

For more information about becoming a Trail of History volunteer, call (815) 338-6223.
