Train Safety Awareness Week in West Chicago July 4-10

West Chicago: June 30, 2011 – Train Safety Awareness Week in West Chicago is July 4-10. Police officers will be conducting enforcement at railroad grade crossings and distributing Operation Lifesaver literature to help educate motorists and pedestrians about railroad safety.

In addition, Train Safety Awareness Week will be highlighted at an informational traffic safety booth exhibit hosted by the CN Railroad Police and the West Chicago Police Department at this year's Railroad Days from 5 to 11 p.m. Friday, July 8 at Reed-Keppler Park.

In conjunction with Operation Lifesaver and the CN Railroad Police, the West Chicago Police Department is dedicated to public education and awareness to end collisions, deaths and injuries at places where roadways cross train tracks, and on railroad rights of way. To accomplish this, the Department is promoting the three E's:

Education: Increase public awareness about the dangers around the rails by educating both motorists and pedestrians to make safe decisions at crossings and around railroad tracks.

Engineering: Promote continued engineering research and innovation to improve the safety of railroad crossings.

Enforcement: Conduct active enforcement of traffic laws relating to crossing signs and signals and private property laws related to trespassing.
