Scouting Lake Zurich at Cary-Grove

Lake Zurich (1-0) at Cary-Grove (0-1)

When: 7:15 p.m. today

Last week: Lake Zurich 20, Fremd 10; Crystal Lake Central 27, Cary-Grove 6

Outlook: Former Fox Valley Conference member Lake Zurich meets C-G for the first time since 2004. Perhaps they'll swap state-title stories, as Lake Zurich won the Class 7A crown in 2007, while Cary-Grove captured the Class 6A championship last season in going 14-0. Lake Zurich played its typical strong defense Opening Night, holding Fremd to just a field goal through three quarters. Linebacker Tim Sayre even provided LZ's "D" with a TD after intercepting a pass late to seal the win. Bears all-state running back Jacob Brinlee rushed for 111 yards on 16 carries. Cary-Grove graduated 19 of 22 starters off last season's title team and its inexperience may have showed against Crystal Lake Central, although Trojans coach Bruce Kay made no excuses. The Tigers limited C-G's usually potent option offense to just 154 yards. "In the second half I feel like our offense settled down and we put some plays together," Kay said. "We made a couple of adjustments and the kids did fine with them. We had spots. When we put plays together without self-inflicted wounds we were fine." Kay is impressed with Lake Zurich. "They look very good," he said. "We're overmatched in size, speed, experience and depth. We have to play good football to put ourselves in a position to win the game." The Trojans haven't been 0-2 since 2002.
