Huntley freezes out Hinsdale South in Pepsi Showdown

Huntley's girls soccer team enjoyed an ice-cold Pepsi Thursday.

Aimee Wronski scored 3 times and the Red Raiders downed Hinsdale South, 4-1, in the Pepsi Shootout in Huntley.

A little snow and sleet didn't stop the Raiders, who won for the 11th time without a loss this season, and for the 100th time in the program's history.

Wronski's 2 breakaways early in the second half broke the game open, sending the top-seeded Red Raiders into the winners' bracket for their quarterfinal round game Saturday at noon against Plainfield North at Olympic Park in Schaumburg.

Huntley came out quickly, but couldn't find the back of the net, hitting the post twice and losing a goal on an offside call. The Raiders then fell into a "lull."

An own goal by the Hornets put Huntley on top in the 25th minute. Wronski added to the lead just 11 seconds before halftime. She pounced on a ball near the crease and slammed it past keeper Vanessa Niestrom. Ashley Schorr assisted.

The Raiders ratcheted up the intensity again after the break, and it paid off with two breakaways by Wronski.

"We came out pretty quick in the second half, then hit another lull," said Huntley coach Kris Grabner. "So we've got to get that stuff figured out."

On her second goal, Wronski took a pass from Emily Konior, beat the defense, and came in on Niestrom. Her high, hard shot, was too hot for Niestrom to handle. Seven minutes later, she again found herself bearing down on the goal. This time, it was a shot on the ground from about 10 yards out.

The Hornets finally got on the board when Sarah Fazal banged in a rebound with 7 minutes to play. The Hornets continued to press up, but couldn't get any closer.
