    A Geneva man was charged with battery and cruelty to animals at 9:30 p.m. March 8 on a trail behind the houses in the 500 block of Edison Street, police said. Michael J. Conlee, 37, of the same block, is accused of punching a neighbor in a shoulder, knocking the person down, and of kicking a dog that he believed was going to bite him, according to a police report.

    With piano players of all age and skill levels performing a diverse catalog of songs that included Lady Gaga, Beethoven, Woody Guthrie there was something for everyone at the American Grands XIX concerts Saturday in Elgin. Organizers arranged the program by ability, which meant there were some interesting combinations onstage. “You literally might have a 6-year-old sitting next to somebody who’s 76 and for me, that’s one of the joys of the program,” said Colin Holman, the American Grands conductor.

    Campton Hills man accused of $500,000 theft Jan 22, 2014 12:00 AM
    A Campton Hills man already facing charges of bilking two clients out of more than $100,000 is now charged with writing bogus checks for a property worth at least $500,000. An arrest warrant has been issued for Peter A. Mazzara, who pleaded guilty in October 2012 to damaging a Kane County couple's $1 million home that he was evicted from and ordered to pay $60,000 restitution.

    Elgin Community College has been awarded a grant from AARP for its Back to Work 50+ program. Students will receive training in the areas of healthcare, office administration, and human services. They also will be provided orientation, coaching, financial literacy, training scholarships, and special access to employers.

    Campton Hills village leaders have hired the village's first administrator. Jennifer Johnsen, a Batavia resident and current administrator in Berkeley, will start later this month. Her contract runs through August 2015 and she has a salary of $89,000 for the full-time job. "I think she'll just make a great fit," said Village President Patsy Smith.

    Elgin Community College recently purchased the remaining 41 acres of the former Spartan Meadows Golf Course for yet-to-be-determined expansion. The sale of the property, just south of the college’s campus at McLean Boulevard and Spartan Drive, was finalized last month. It culminates an $8 million deal struck almost a year ago with the city of Elgin for the land, said Sharon Konny, ECC vice president of business and finance.

  • ECC, faculty reach tentative 3-year deal Dec 20, 2013 12:00 AM
    A tentative agreement for a new faculty contract at Elgin Community College was reached, officials said. Negotiating teams for the college’s faculty association — which represents 526 part-time and full-time instructors — and the college board reached a tentative agreement on Thursday for a new three-year contract. Details of the agreement will not be released until it is ratified by union members and the board of trustees.

    Elgin Community College and Judson University both held commencement ceremonies over the weekend to send their graduates out into the world. ECC held their ceremony on Friday evening and Judson held two ceremonies Saturday honoring their graduates.
