  • Self-published authors can enter Soon to Be Famous Illinois Author contest Nov 20, 2014 9:02 PM
    Illinois authors who have self-published an adult fiction book may enter the second year of the Soon to be Famous Illinois Author project until Monday, Dec. 15. The Soon to be Famous Illinois Author project is being coordinated in collaboration with the Illinois Library Association and Reaching Across Illinois Library System (RAILS) and is supported by the American Library Association Digital Content Working Group, the Public Library Association (PLA), Illinois Heartland Library System.

     
  • 3 Fox Valley referendums: Gail Borden, Sleepy Hollow, fire district Nov 3, 2014 5:53 PM
    Voters in the Fox Valley will have three referendum questions on Tuesday’s ballot, including one asking if they want to add land on the western edge of the Gail Borden Public Library District. Sleepy Hollow voters will decide whether to approve an 82 percent property tax increase. Voters in and near Wasco and Campton Hills will decide whether to disconnect from the Elburn and Countryside Fire Protection District to join the Fox River and Countryside Fire/Rescue District.

     
  • Judge won’t rush results of Elburn fire district vote Oct 22, 2014 6:44 PM
    A Kane County judge has agreed not to immediately certify results of a Nov. 4 referendum asking if some properties should be allowed to disconnect from the Elburn Fire Protection District. Circuit Judge David Akemann agreed to the delay Monday at the request of the Elburn fire district, which is appealing his Aug. 28 decision to allow the referendum to take place. If voters approve the disconnection, Akemann would be asked to certify the vote and order the disconnection. If voters decide not to, Akemann would have to dismiss the petition, according to a motion filed by the Fox River district, which opposed the stay.

     
  • Girl Scouts open Camp Explorers Oct 7, 2014 2:17 PM
    Girl Scouts of Northern Illinois will open Camp Dean in Big Rock to the public for a Camp Explorers program on Saturday, Oct. 25, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. This youth and family-friendly event will include cardboard boat races, archery, crate stacking, fishing, and a scavenger hunt.

     
  • Illinois 4-H Hall of Fame inducts 3 from Tri-County area Sep 29, 2014 8:52 AM
    In August, more than 1,000 supporters watched the induction of 66 new members into the Illinois 4-H Hall of Fame, including three representatives of the tri-county area of DuPage, Kane and Kendall Counties. Area winners include: Laura Bennett, DuPage County; Carol McKellar, Kane County; and Mary Ann Petersen, Kendall County.

    Brock J. Reynolds, 26, of Carpentersville, was arrested Tuesday on drug and fleeing charges after police said he led them on a brief high-speed chase through a neighborhood while he had marijuana in his possession, according to a police report.

     
  • Tri-Cities police reports Mar 14, 2014 4:16 PM
    A Geneva man was charged with battery and cruelty to animals at 9:30 p.m. March 8 on a trail behind the houses in the 500 block of Edison Street, police said. Michael J. Conlee, 37, of the same block, is accused of punching a neighbor in a shoulder, knocking the person down, and of kicking a dog that he believed was going to bite him, according to a police report.

    Elgin Community College has named a recent player and a current student to be the head coach of its women’s soccer team. Rick Ceh, who played for the Spartans’ men’s team in 2013 and is currently studying for his Associate Degree in Applied Science at the school, will be the team’s new head coach.

    With piano players of all age and skill levels performing a diverse catalog of songs that included Lady Gaga, Beethoven, Woody Guthrie there was something for everyone at the American Grands XIX concerts Saturday in Elgin. Organizers arranged the program by ability, which meant there were some interesting combinations onstage. “You literally might have a 6-year-old sitting next to somebody who’s 76 and for me, that’s one of the joys of the program,” said Colin Holman, the American Grands conductor.
