  • Mid-Suburban League lands three state swimming finalists Feb 27, 2015 11:07 PM
    Jake Barson had a steely, confident look atop the starting block seconds before hitting the pool in the 100-yard breaststroke at Friday’s boys swimming and diving state championships. He had this. And a mere 57.38 seconds later, he made it official. Barson broke his own school record in winning his preliminary heat en route to placing fourth overall and advancing to Saturday’s championship finals at New Trier. He was one of three Mid-Suburban League swimmers to finish in the top six, thereby earning a shot at a state title. The others were Elk Grove’s Colin Williams, who qualified fifth in the 100 butterfly (49.70) and Barrington’s Colin O’Leary, sixth in the 100 backstroke (51.17).

  • Conant’s Alexander bounces back, grabs third Feb 22, 2015 12:42 AM
    Bobby Alexander and his coaches at Conant had it all planned out in their atttempt at a 138-pound wrestling state championship. But Anthony Cheloni of Marmion Academy had a similar plan, and it turned out his carried the day. On Friday night, the talented sophomore dashed Alexander’s title dream with a hard-fought 3-0 victory in the semifinals, sending the Cougars standout into wrestlebacks. Alexander certainly made the best of things. On Saturday afternoon, he led six Mid-Suburban League medalists by claiming a third-place finish to cap a sensational four-year career.

    How did the Mid-Suburban East’s top boys swimming teams stack up at the Glenbrook North sectional on Saturday afternoon? In historically strong fashion, that’s how. With winners in 5 of the 8 individual swimming events, those East teams showed they certainly belonged in a field led by meet champion New Trier (287 points) and Glenbrook North (181.5). Rolling Meadows added to its memorable season by finishing third with 157 points, 1 point better than Loyola, and breaking all kinds of new ground along the way. Rolling Meadows, Prospect, Hersey and Elk Grove each had event winners, and Wheeling advanced a pair of relays to next weekend's state meet.

     
  • Revved-up St. Viator handles St. Patrick Feb 20, 2015 10:18 PM
    Like an older car, St. Viator’s basketball team took a little while to get warmed up Friday night at Cahill gymnasium on senior night. Once the Lions started rolling, though, there was no stopping them in a 46-34 East Suburban Catholic Conference win over St. Patrick. With one conference game to go at Marist on Wednesday, St. Viator broke its three-game losing streak and now sports a 15-9, 6-2 record.

     
  • Antioch moves on; Lakes bows out Feb 20, 2015 11:47 PM
    Amy Reiser had 18 points, 10 rebounds and 8 steals, as Antioch’s top-seeded girls basketball team defeated St. Viator 59-39 in the Class 3A Wauconda regional final Friday night. Lakes bowed out of the postseason with a 50-38 loss to North Chicago at Chicago Northside.

  • Heartache for Conant’s Alexander Feb 21, 2015 12:56 AM
    Having gone into his state semifinal wrestling match on a record 41-match unbeaten streak, Conant senior Bobby Alexander started as the favorite — not only advance into the 138-pound final Saturday night, but to eventually secure a state championship for himself and coach Chad Hay. But sophomore Anthony Cheloni, the No. 4 seed, had ideas of his own. And when their six-minute bout was whistled over, it was Cheloni earning a spot in the Grand March at 5:30 p.m. Saturday to honor those who will compete for a state crown. Cheloni (34-11) delivered a 3-0 victory, sending the top-ranked Alexander to his first loss of the season.

  • Regional wins for Buffalo Grove, St. Viator Feb 19, 2015 12:49 AM
    With her team nursing a 3-point lead in the third quarter, junior Amanda Kowalski hit a big 3-pointer for Buffalo Grove, and it helped propel the No. 5-seeded Bison to a 53-49 victory over No. 12 Lake Zurich in the semifinals of the Class 4A Carmel girls basketball regional in Mundelein on Wednesday. The Bison (20-10) will face No. 4 Stevenson (26-4) at 7 p.m. Friday for the title. It marked the first 20-win season in BG coach Steve Kolodziej’s three seasons, and the second time the Bison will play for a regional crown during his tenure.

     
  • Montini leads the way downstate at Antioch Feb 14, 2015 9:39 PM
    It was a banner day for Montini’s wrestling team in the Class 2A Antioch individual sectional Saturday. The top-ranked Broncos once again proved that they are in a class of their own. They boasted seven champions and a total of 10 wrestlers who will be heading downstate next weekend for the 78th annual state meet. Montini was led by two-time state champion Xavier Montalvo (37-3), who recorded 3 pins in rolling to the 182-pound championship.

     
  • Mooney, ND deal St. Viator an ESCC setback Feb 13, 2015 10:22 PM
    St. Viator picked a bad night to have a bad night. Hosting East Suburban Catholic Conference leader Notre Dame on Friday, the Lions were playing with the chance to move into a first-place tie with the Dons, but that was not to be. The combination of ice-cold shooting for three quarters and the hot hand of Notre Dame’s Joe Mooney were enough to send the Lions to a 58-41 defeat in Cahill Gym.

    Despite a strong fourth quarter in which St. Viator outscored Joliet Catholic 14-13, the Lions fell 79-36 to the Angels on Wednesday night in East Suburban Catholic Conference girls basketball action in Joliet.

  • Boudreaux, Lake Forest too much for St .Viator Feb 10, 2015 10:04 PM
    Lake Forest center Evan Boudreaux showed everyone in St. Viator’s Cahill gymnasium that he is the real deal. Boudreaux, a 6-foot-8 senior, scored 28 points and pulled down 17 rebounds in the Scouts’ 57-45 nonconference win over the Lions on Tuesday night. The win gave the Scouts a 22-1 record, with a seven-game win streak. The Lions fell to 14-8 but played well for most of the game.

  • Time’s right for another Conant win Feb 9, 2015 10:27 PM
    Playing on a Monday night during a school week was a first for Conant’s girls basketball team this season. “This was kind of different,” said Cougars senior guard Dani Engelbreit. “We’re used to Tuesday and Friday nights.” But the Cougars are also used to winning. Regardless of the night of the week, the Cougars (21-4) still knew how to win as they posted a 45-37 victory over a stubborn St. Viator squad in its own Cahill Gymnasium in Arlington Heights.
