    A second person has died due to gunshot injuries sustained during a fight between two brothers in Huntley last month. Mark Grundei, 50, died Wednesday from a penetrating gunshot wound to the head that the coroner said was a suicide. Grundei shot himself after shooting his brother May 26, authorities said.

    Algonquin leaders are calling on the public to help them keep the village’s fire hydrants safe and visible for the firefighters. The village launched its Adopt-A-Hydrant program earlier this week. “We have over 2,200 hydrants in town and when we get snow covers like this last storm, it’s very hard to get around to clearing the hydrants just by the quantity,” said Andy Warmus, the village’s utilities superintendent.

    A sport utility vehicle smashed into a tree in unincorporated McHenry County near Huntley Thursday morning, after it was re-ended by another vehicle, authorities said. The crash required the SUV driver’s hospitalization, but the heavy rainstorms in the area complicated the situation by preventing a rescue helicopter from getting to the scene, said Andrew Zinke, undersheriff for the McHenry County Sheriff’s Office.

    An Elgin woman’s poodle was killed by her neighbor’s dogs at about 10:30 a.m. Sunday in the 200 block of Liberty Street, according to police reports. The woman let her dog out and later received the poodle, dead, from her neighbor, who said he heard his dogs barking and looked outside to see the poodle already dead, reports said. The poodle probably entered the neighbor’s yard through a small hole in the fence; the neighbor owns five boxers and one Pomeranian, reports said.
