Couple at Monarch Landing of Naperville celebrate 70 years of wedded bliss
The length of their marriage is roughly nine times the national average, and the happiness factor is incomparable.
Jean and Joe Stubits have been blissfully married for 70 years. The residents of Monarch Landing in Naperville will be holding a happy hour celebration for a couple hundred of their good friends at the senior living community this month.
“We've had a great life together,” said Joe. “We spend a lot of time together and enjoy time with our family.” For many years, they traveled extensively worldwide. “Now we're traveling in the U.S. We meet a lot of nice people.”
When they first met, Jean recalled, “We just clicked right away.”
“She was just vivacious,” Joe said.
In subsequent years, “We've grown tremendously. We've reached a truly beautiful time of our marriage,” said Jean.
Joe attributes their great marriage to “Communication. There are two sides to every coin. And we have a very strong family ethic. I attribute that to my wife and the way she brought our kids up.”
Jean noted, “We have to work as a team, and we do. There's time when things are not as bright, but they can be bright when you make them bright.”
“I made a great decision. I love and appreciate her more every day,” said Joe.
Describing his wife, Joe said, “She's a type of soul of the earth kind of person. There's none better and damn few as good.”
Describing Joe, Jean said, “He's a go-getter. Everybody loves him. Everyone knows Joe. He's very outgoing, nice to people, and always seems to say the right thing.”
The couple moved to Monarch Landing eight years ago. “We looked at a number of different communities, and this was it,” said Joe. ”You could see all the wonderful things going on here.”
“You could tell people were alive and friendly,” said Jean.
They were very pleased that Monarch Landing offers higher levels of care should their health change. “You don't want your children having to think about taking care of you,” said Jean. “Everything we'll ever need is right here.”
“We love it here. This is where we want to be,” said Joe.
And “each other” is who they want to be with.
